SCENARIO ANSWER # 7
You are correct. Some might say that since you are on your property you're able to show your firearm to stop an argument from escalating. What you have actually done was to make a volatile situation even worse. Per state laws you must conceal your weapon at all times. Intentionally showing your weapon in the heat of an argument can land you in jail for three years. Not to mention, you can get yourself shot. For example, you get into an argument with your neighbor. Thinking that you'll diffuse the situation you move your shirt aside, just like in the scenario, to show him your gun. Unbeknownst to you, your neighbor is also armed and takes your movement as a threat. Being that your intent was just to scare your neighbor, you are not prepared to draw your weapon. The neighbor gets the drop on you and shoots you. He would be justified because he'll be able to articulate that there was an argument and you exposed your weapon in a threatening manner. Remember, anytime you show your firearm you've violated the law. You are only allowed to shoot/pull your firearm if you think you might need to use it or threaten to use it, to stop a forcible felony. At no other time are you justified. So, be careful. You don't know how many times I've had students in my class tell me they have done something similar. They are very lucky to (1) not be in jail and (2) be alive.
